How is a facelift procedure performed?
The patient arrives on the day of the surgery having fasted. The surgeon meets with her, performs an examination, and discusses her specific needs. Then, we mark and map the surgical plan directly on the patient’s face. During the procedure, the priority is protection while planning around nerves and the key areas targeted for treatment. Afterward, the patient is sedated; she goes to sleep, but it is not necessarily general anesthesia, rather sedative anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation. Next is the sterilization process, which we call ‘Prep and Drape,’ meaning applying the sterile covers. After placing the drapes or towels, the surgeon administers a local anesthetic throughout the entire surgical area of the face so that even though the patient is under light IV sedation, she feels no pain during the procedure. Then, the skin is incised to reach the deep plane. The procedure is performed entirely while protecting the nerves, followed by tightening the skin correctly, removing the excess skin, and suturing (the stitches). After lifting the deep plane, the patient is moved to the recovery areas. These are roughly the steps for every facelift surgery.
